Mountains: Missing Climbers, Possible Helicopter Flyover in the Afternoon

Naples, Dec. 26 (LaPresse) – Teams from Alpine Rescue and the Guardia di Finanza are at Fonte Cerreto, the base station for the cable car to Campo Imperatore, to coordinate the resumption of search activities for the two climbers who have been missing on Gran Sasso since Sunday afternoon.

Today, ground attempts have been ruled out due to a marked avalanche risk (level 3 on a scale of 5), which makes it unsafe for Alpine Rescue teams to operate with skis or crampons.

Currently, weather conditions remain unfavorable, but an improvement is expected around lunchtime. If the improvement is confirmed, a helicopter flyover of the area where the two climbers are believed to be located could be possible in the early afternoon.
